35.

Duncan stood; his heart heavy. He hoped Haltim had some luck with Rache. He didn’t want her to leave. He felt more connected to her than any other woman he’d ever even spoken to. He wasn’t sure what it was, but even with the wearing off fog of the Cloud dose he’d taken, he’d been drawn to her.

Duncan took careful steps around the room, trying to keep calm. Taking Cloud wasn’t a long-term solution, he knew that. There had to be another way, a better way to keep his anger in check. The sound of the door opening broke his concentration on his steps.

Haltim stood there smiling. “She will stay.”

Bursting through the lingering fog, Duncan felt a leap of his heart. “Good... Good.” He could feel his skin getting heated as he said the words. “So, what now? We failed at intercepting William. We don’t have the money to stay here forever and taking advantage of the woman who owns the place, your friend, Bessim, isn’t right.” Duncan leaned against the wall. He both wanted to change the subject, and to get back to the task at hand. Things with Rache gave him a jumble of feelings anyway. No one would harm William if he could do anything about it.

“Well, there’s a few things. As I said before, I still have some connections I can trust inside the Priesthood. I can see if I can use those connections to send a message to Will. As for money, you need to get a job.” Haltim paused. “Before you ask ... I’m too old and risk being discovered. Rache might be able to get a job working an Inn where traders come in and out. Bessim might have something for her here.”

“And me?” Duncan knew where this was going.

“Well you’re the most useful, at least in terms of a job.” Haltim kept going waving his hands up. “Hold on. You’re young, strong, and can work. We need to find the right fit.”

“Am I a man or a pack mule?” Duncan snorted. The Priest was right, but he didn’t like it. Regular work wasn’t any fun, if he’d wanted that life, he’d have never gotten into scaving. He didn’t enjoy taking orders much and preferred working alone.

“Haltim I’m a scaver. I don’t do other work. Not if I can help it.” Duncan pointed out.

“There’s not a lot of ruins here to scave there Duncan. Sure, there’s run down parts of town, this is Ture, but even those places are clean. Nothing valuable there.” Haltim sat on the edge of the bed, folding his hands in his lap.

Haltims face changed in an instant from thought to surprise. “Mucker!”

“Muck what?” The word confused Duncan. “Never heard of Muck whatever. And it doesn’t sound like anything I want to do.”

“Mucker, or Mucky. It’s smelly, but it’s like scaving. Sort of.” The old priests face was lit up now. “Back in the Reach, you scaved, searched for treasures in ruins. Being a Mucker, is well, you clean the sewers.
